Javier L. Lara, UC-IHCantabria
New advances in the use of OpenFOAM in coastal and offshore engineering
Javier López Lara is Full Professor at the University of Cantabria (UC). He is also responsible for the Hydrodynamics and Coastal Infrastructures Group of IHCantabria. Javier graduated as a Civil Engineer (1998) from the University of Cantabria and obtained his PhD in 2002 from the same university. After holding various positions as a researcher at the University of Cantabria and at Cornell University (USA), he obtained a position as “Ramón y Cajal” (2008-2012) in the Department of Water Science and Technology at UC, where he is currently a sub-director.
Javier has developed his research in the field of wave hydrodynamics, specializing also surf zone hydrodynamics and wave-structure interactions, using both experimental and numerical methods, the latter focusing mainly on CFD codes. In recent years he has extended his research to environmental flows, hydrodynamics of aquatic ecosystems and hydraulics. Through his research he was awarded the Modesto Vigueras Prize 2004, granted by the Technical Association of Ports and Coastal Areas, Spanish branch of the International Ports Association (PIANC) and the International Research Prize “Paepe-Willems” (PIANC), in 2005, granted to researchers under 40 years old.
Javier is currently Principal Investigator in several projects funded by the Spanish Scince Ministry, competitive projects financed by the Spanish Innnovation Ministry and different EU Proyects. He has published 52 SCI research papers and 8 book chapters. He has advised 45 MSc and bachelor thesis and 12 PhD dissertations. He has coauthored more than one hundred national and international congress communications.
David R. Fuhrman, DTU
A decade of simulating coastal processes in OpenFOAM
David R. Fuhrman is Professor of Coastal Dynamics at the Technical University of Denmark, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering. His research has contributed broadly to coastal and offshore engineering, spanning from the water surface to the sea bed. His areas of expertise include: nonlinear wave hydrodynamics, turbulence modelling, wave boundary layers, surf zone dynamics, sediment transport and scour. His collaborative research has helped lead to the original release and development of the widely-used wave generating package “waves2foam” in OpenFOAM. He has additionally made novel contributions in turbulence modelling beneath surface waves, which are now part of the official ESI release (the “multiphaseStabilizedTurbulence” fvOption). He has authored or co-authored approximately 70 journal articles and a recently published textbook on coastal turbulence.
Julien Reveillon, URN-CORIA
Regarding the modeling of atomization, aeration and impact on solids of two-phase flows
Julien Reveillon is Professor at the University of Rouen-Normandy and researcher at CORIA in the field of fluid mechanics and energetics. He has worked for many years on reactive two-phase flows with direct numerical simulation codes. Then, with the objective of directly applying physical models to industrial applications, he switched to OpenFoam for the study of two-phase flows with the presence of an interface. His current research topics are atomization modeling, liquid/structure impacts with a focus on environmental and energy applications.
Andrés Gómez Tato, CESGA
OpenFOAM, HPC and beyond
Dr. Andrés Gómez Tato is PdD on Physics and currently the Applications & Projects Department Manager at CESGA, Galicia Supercomputign Center. He has participated in several European Projects related to the application of High Performance Computing to Small and Medium Enterprises Challenges as FORTISSIMO, FORTISSIMO-2, CloudPYME and now FF4EuroHPC. On these projects, CESGA has pushed the usage of OpenFOAM to analize complex industrial problems. Additionally, he leads the CESGA application support area where they helps researchers and companies to make a good use of the HPC resources. He has published more than 50 papers in pre-review journals and conferences. Currently his research topics are application of HPC and Machine Learning to industry and Quantum Computing.
